This document represents the first handbook of the Council of Europe on the law of European Union in the data protection field, taking into account the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights and of the Court of Justice of the European Union.

The handbook explains the way in which data protection is regulated by the legislation of the European Union, by Convention 108 of the Council of Europe for the protection of individuals with regard to automatic processing of personal data but also by other legal instruments of the Council of Europe.

This handbook is addressed to all interested in the data protection field.

The document contains aspects referring to:

data protection terminology,
principles and rules of the European data protection law,
data subjects’ rights and their enforcement,
transborder data flows,
data protection in the context of police and criminal justice.
