28 January 2025 – EUROPEAN DATA PROTECTION DAY
On 28 January 2025, all the Member States of Council of Europe celebrate the European Data Protection Day, through which we mark 44 years since the adoption, in 1981, in Strasbourg, of Convention 108 for the protection of individuals with regard to automatic data processing of personal data, by the Council of Europe.
The events organised by the national data protection authorities to mark this date represent an important opportunity to increase the general public’s awareness of the risks and the need to respect the right to private life of individuals, especially in the context of the current accelerated technological development.
On this occasion, our institution highlights the significant impact that Regulation (EU) 2016/679 has on the actual activity of public and private sector controllers, an instrument with direct applicability in the European Union and with indirect effects on the legislation of other European states and on other continents.
In 2025, in consideration of the special significance of this year for our institution and of the European Data Protection Day, the National Supervisory Authority for the Processing of Personal Data is organising, on 28 January 2025, the online conference entitled “20 years Anniversary review after setting up ANSPDCP”.
Our institution celebrates this year the 20th anniversary since the adoption, on 3 May 2005, of Law no. 102/2005 on the setting up, organisation and functioning of the National Supervisory Authority for Personal Data Processing, republished.
This special event will be attended by representatives of the central national public authorities and institutions, of the executive and legislative forums, representatives of academic environments, non-governmental organisations, the main professional unions/associations, as well as relevant controllers/processors from the public and private sectors.
This meeting is the favourable moment for a substantial exchange of ideas between our institution and controllers, related to the specificity of the activity in various fields and the implications of the use of new technologies.
In this context, an informative video dedicated to the General Data Protection Regulation shall be broadcasted on the national television TVR and in the means of public transportation of Bucharest Transportation Company.
In light of the organised events, we highlights that synthetic information on the Authority’s activity are presented, as every year, in the Brochure dedicated to the European Data Protection Day, available, together with the related leaflet at www.dataprotection.ro/informatii generale/informatii de interes public/materiale informative.
